Dates & Altered Sessions
Details of any cancelled or altered sessions will be shown here. Typically these will be due to events taking place in the harbour.
The 3am start concluded that we could not safely swim at that point. As a group we agreed to meet again at 9am to assess safety for a 10am start.
The Dover Rowing Regatta takes place on Saturday 8th June. The swim zone will be suspended for the duration of the rowing regatta. We need to be clear of the water before this.
To avoid this we will start our training session at 3am.
We will start in the dark and swim into daylight. Because we are starting in the dark:
We won’t be accepting any new swimmers on that day
You will be required to wear two electronic adventure lights (the ones you need for your big day)
You must attend the mandatory briefing on the day which will include additional information for this session
The size of the training zone will be reduced during the hours of darkness for safety. There will be lights around the zone that we create.
Towards the end of the session the support boats will be setting up the course for the regatta and you should ensure you swim in close to shore, which means a break from the usual anti-clockwise route around the harbour.
This is the first training session of the season.
If it’s your first time with us please arrive to start at 9am
Thereafter all training sessions start at 10am
Training starts at 9am, arrive early to attend the mandatory briefing
As has become the custom we will have a BBQ to mark the end of the season. Training will still be on, bring your inflatables, and feel free to play and bob (unless you're still waiting for your big swim and then training is more appropriate!
Use the form below to book your space
Tip: You’ll need to click the ‘Set time zone’ button before you can proceed and book.
The swim zone will be suspended for the day on Sunday 26th August due to the Dover Town Regatta. We need to be clear of the water by 8.30am.
To accommodate this we will be starting at 4am.
If you haven't had the opportunity to practice swimming in the dark this is an ideal opportunity. It's also good to practice starting so early in the morning so that you know what it will be like on the big day - getting breakfast at silly o'clock, applying suncream in the dark etc.
Sunrise is approximately 6am, so there will be a period of time where it is fully dark, unlike the last time we started early when it was just starting to get light as we got in the water. It won't be dark for the full 2 hours before sunrise though as it will start to get light before the sun appears above the horizon.
If you really don't fancy 4am, we will offer a 6am start for those of you who prefer and don't need to swim any longer than 2 hours.
You will be required to wear two electronic light sticks. If you have a tow float, another idea for visibility is to put a lightstick inside.
We will put light sticks on the buoys and the swim zone will be substantially reduced during the hours of the darkness. We aim to put a kayak in the water as well.
It is quite likely that normal parking will be blocked off. I suspect that the closest that you will be able to park is behind the green. Alternatively, you should be able to park in the new St James square car park.
There will be no training during the normal hours of training.
Please ask if you have any questions.
Due to the location of the course for this event, we won't be able to train in Dover on this date. We will be training in Ramsgate instead:
Please use the following address for Sat Nav:
Ramsgate Main Sands
There is car parking on Marine Esplinade in a fee paying car park, or you can park up on the cliff top for free. If you park on the cliff top you come down the multicoloured steps shown in the photo below to access the beach.
Where we'll meet
Base camp will be right in the middle of the swim zone that we'll use. Please meet in front of the blue kiosk (see second photo). We will swim to the harbour wall in one direction and we'll give you a reasonable distance in the other direction.
This is a normal public beach which has paddlers which will generally be at the end by the main kiosks. Jet skiers etc are at the very far end of the beach and we will make sure that you don't venture that far.
Ramsgate will give you the opportunity to check out the channel from a different perspective. It has tides which you tend not to notice in Dover.
Training starts at the usual time - 9am in the water. Arrive early enough to register, attend the briefing, get ready and in the water on time.
The Dover Rowing Regatta will take place in Dover on 9th June. Whilst it's fun to watch, we won't be able to swim at the same time.
As a result we will start our swim at 4am and swim into the sunrise. There is an optional short swim starting at 8am. We must be clear of the water by 10am.
To avoid the invetiable fading away of the season as you all do your swims one by one and then go back to your normal life I thought it would be nice to celebrate all your achievements with an end of season BBQ.
We'll swim, as usual, starting at 9am and then have a BBQ at lunchtime.
On this day anything goes (unless you're still in serious training!). Bring inflatables, fins, whatever - just have fun. You can even wear any colour hat (I know - how will you cope!) and choose how long you do!!
This will be the last training day for 2017
Strong winds from the SW on a spring tide and the timing of high water mean that Hythe is not a good choice of training location for tomorrow. I've checked to see if piling is going ahead tomorrow and it seems it is but it may not impact swimming.
As a result, training is moving to Dover with a start time of noon or 2pm.
Training starts 2.30pm Saturday 29th April. Due to construction work in the harbour training times and locations are impacted. Details are as follows:
May (all training in Dover Harbour)
Saturdays: start 2.30pm
Bank holidays: 9am
June onwards - Saturdays will change again
M20 Closed this weekend
Following on from the M20 road closures last weekend caused by a bridge collapse, the M20 is going to be closed again this weekend for further repairs.
The M20 will close at 8pm Friday and not re-open again until 6am Monday.
So if this is your route to Dover you will need an alternative.
I'll be travelling down after work on Friday to avoid any potential congestion.
Dover Regatta day is on Saturday 23rd July. There will be NO parking permitted on the sea front at all that day.
Please arrange to park elsewhere, for example behind the green or further into town.
As a result of this, we will only be bringing minimal kit onto the beach. So if you wish to buy any CS&PF or Dover Channel Training goodies, it's worth either doing that another day or letting Irene know what you want in advance or for Dover Channel Training stuff, pre-ordering on-line.
The BLDSA Champion of Champions event takes place on 18th June in Dover Harbour. Their course will be towards the Prince of Wales Pier (opposite end to the ferries).
Training will still take place as normal, we may just have some restrictions on the area that we are able to use (though these are minimal).
