The Beach Crew
All about the volunteers that keep the training working 'The Beach Crew'
Whilst our group works by all of us helping out on a volunteer rota, some key names are shown below.....
I took over from Freda in leading training in Dover in 2016. This was planned over a couple of years. Whilst Freda may not always be present on the beach, I will still be speaking with her and taking advice, continuing to learn.
My love affair with the channel started in 2005 when I was part of an impromptu channel relay. It was the most amazing experience and left me wanting more. I went on to attempt the channel in 2007 but didn’t make it. With Freda’s help and a lot of work I was successful in 2009. I know and understand both success and failure. As many will know, I have had many battles with training, so if the mental side of it is tough for you, I will be able to understand and hopefully help. I now have the following successful swims to my name:
- 4 x 6 person English Channel Relay
- 2 x 4 person English Channel Relay
- 3 x 3 person English Channel Relay
- 2 x English Channel Solo
- Round Jersey Solo
- Jersey to France Solo
I have created a small selection of Dover Channel training merchandise which can be purchased online or on the beach from me. I’ll also be selling lightsticks, CNP and UCAN and anything else that we think may be useful.
John is the admin guru. If you’ve signed up online, John will have your card ready for you. If you want to sign up on the beach either bring a completed and signed form with you, or complete one on the beach, hand over your money and then John will then give you a card. Card payments are possible, but only via me.
John keeps a book with all the important details about our swimmers so that we know how to get hold of your or your emergency contact, should we need to.
FREDA STREETER ‘CHANNEL GENERAL’
Freda led leading training on the beach from 1982 - 2015. After 34 years of being there come wind, rain, sun and all the other conditions that English weather throws at us, Freda decided that it was time to take a less active role. Who can blame her!
Freda has helped hundreds of swimmers to achieve their goals and in some cases go on to achieve things they never dared to believe were possible. I am fortunate to be one of those people.
I’m sure we’ll still see plenty of her on the beach, just at times when she chooses.
Because we are a group of friends training together, we are blessed with extra people helping from time to time. Friends, partners, swimmers etc. It all helps.
We now work with a volunteer rota, so please do sign-up, training will only work if we all do our bit. You really should try it sometime, you get a whole different perspective on training. Help with feeding is the most important part, with lots of people all needing feeding at the same time.
BARRIE & Irene Wakeham
Barrie & Irene have recently put away their crocs and retired from serving hundreds of swimmers each year. After 19 years of service, we will miss you.
